Bachelor of Science, 1938, Bachelor of Music, 1938, Master of Music, 1940, The Johns Hopkins University

Professor Emeritus in Residence since 1988, George Steiner has been a leader in the Washington musical community since 1938 -- as a performer, conductor, administrator and teacher. He was formerly associate concert master of the National Symphony Orchestra, concertmaster of the National Gallery Orchestra, director of the American University Chamber Music Society, director of the Washington Camerata Orchestra, The Friday Morning Music Club Orchestra and the Alexandria Symphony (where he is now conductor laureate). Prof. Steiner has performed as violin recitalist, soloist and guest conductor with many orchestras and has directed, produced, and performed in many television programs and movie soundtracks. He was appointed to the faculty of The George Washington University in 1960 to institute a music program where none had existed in its previous 140-year history. The Department of Music quickly grew and expanded with Prof. Steiner as its chairman. Complete undergraduate and graduate degree programs were established and fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. Under Prof. Steiner's planning and guidance, a new music facility was built in the University Academic Center. His many honors include the National Symphony Orchestra's Special Citation for Distinguished Service to the Washington Music Community (1953), The Distinguished Alumnus Award from The Johns Hopkins University (1973) and the Distinguished Washington Educator Award (1987). The Steiner Music Scholarship was established in 1984 after Prof. Steiner stepped down as department chairman, and its continuing growth has been a great success in encouraging talented music students in the University's music curricula.
