Dr. Stephen Brown is well known in the Washington area as a pianist, vocal coach and accompanist. In addition to his teaching, Prof. Brown also accompanies students in departmental recitals. He has appeared at Barker Hall, Jordan Hall, Sumner Auditorium and on many concert and recital series. He has played concertos with the McLean Symphony and Washington Pro Musica orchestras. He has accompanied in numerous vocal studios and opera workshops. He has also sung professionally as a tenor and was for many years a member of the Washington Opera Chorus. Before coming to GW in 1994, he taught piano at Northern Virginia Community College and in his private studio. As a conductor, he has served as musical director for various opera and musical comedy productions. He has made a specialty of "rediscovering" neglected song literature, particularly by masters of the early 20th century. In 1995, with baritone Aurelius Gori, he performed a series of recitals presenting most of the vocal works of Andre Caplet. Recent activities have included appearances with the Eldbrooke Artist Series, at Sumner Auditorium, on the "Con Spirito" concert series, which was broadcast on National Public Radio, and a lecture recital for the College Music Society at the University of Virginia.
