Cellist Lori Barnet grew up in Kensington, MD where she began her studies at age 4, eventually beginning the cello at age 9. She studied locally with Morris Kirshbaum, then of the NSO, and with Robert Newirk at Catholic University. Ms. Barnet continue her studies at Bennington College with George Finkel and Barbara Stein Mallow, contemporary chamber performance with Jacob Glick, and composition with Vivian Fine and Pulitzer Prize winner Henry Brandt. Additional work was done in chamber music under the tutelage of Josef Gingold, Artur Balsam, and Joseph Fuchs.

Ms. Barnet has been a member of the Richmond Symphony, served as principal of the Augusta Symphony (GA), Alexandria Symphony and Washington Chamber Symphony and was cellist from 1978-1991 of Penn Contemporary Players in Philadelphia, under the direction of Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Wernick. Currently, she serves as principal cellist of the National Philharmonic, Wolf Trap Opera Orchestra, the Contemporary Music Forum, Orchestra 2001 (Philadelphia). For two years, she served as guest principal of the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra in Ft. Myers. She has appeared as soloist with the Augusta and Alexandria Symphonies, with the National Philharmonic and Washington Chamber Symphony and with Orchestra 2001. Ms. Barnet has traveled extensively in Europe and Russia performing works of American composers and has numerous recordings to her credit, including disks of music by Steven Gerber, Robert Parris, Herman Berlinski and George Crumb. Her musical interests extend to the chamber repertoire and she is a regular chamber performer throughout the Washington DC and Philadelphia areas, including Strathmore Hall Arts Center, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress.

Since 1991, Ms Barnet has taught at the George Washington University where she is Adjunct Associate Professor, and shecontinues to work with secondary school students as cello coach of the Montgomery Classic Youth Orchestras, as teacher at the National Philharmonic Summer Insitute for High School String Players, and as a sought-after adjudicator for festivals and competitions. Ms. Barnet is married and has three children.
