Director's Welcome

Welcome to the Museum Studies Program of the George Washington University located in the Nation's Capital. Established in 1976, GW's Museum Studies Program is the largest and one of the first of its kind in the United States. Our reputation for excellence is based on the strength of our faculty, a demanding academic curriculum, and a strong internship program. Museum Studies faculty are drawn from a pool of practicing museum professionals from the Washington D.C area with many years of experience in all aspects of museum operations. They teach what they practice, often on location in the very museums where they are employed.

Our program is also known for academic excellence. Each student is free to specialize in one of the three museum studies areas: collections management, exhibition or administration. The academic core requirement, taught by GW's nationally acclaimed graduate faculty, provides each Museum Studies student with a solid foundation in an academic subject, such as Anthropology, History, or American Studies. All our students are also required to gain practical working experience through our internship affiliations with over 60 museums and cultural organizations, including the Center for Museum Studies of the Smithsonian Institution. GW's Museum Studies Program offers a friendly environment, where students are supported, encouraged and given individualized attention. Join us and prepare for a rewarding museum career!
