The Smithsonian Institution works closely with the University in the training of students and, as a rule, those in the Certificate Program serve their internships in one or more Smithsonian offices or museums. However, students may elect to take all or part of their internship experience in other local museums or cultural organizations. Internships must meet University requirements and are subject to approval and oversight by the Director of Museum Studies.

Resources of the Smithsonian Institution's Center for Education and Museum Studies are also available to certificate students. That office assists in orientation, identifies appropriate Smithsonian internships for individual students, introduces students to the Museum Reference Center (the country's largest library devoted to museum studies resources) and serves as a central point of information on Smithsonian activities that may enhance student’s learning opportunities.
