GW STUDENTS AVAILABLE TO GIVE PERSONAL ACCOUNTS OF THE EARTHQUAKE IN TURKEY

These students are returning back to classes this week at The George Washington University. They can give their perspective on the earthquake and comment on the effect on their families in the U.S. and Turkey.

HALIM TANSUG
Halim Tansug is a senior from Istanbul and president of the Turkish Student Association. He is coordinating fundraising efforts on GW's campus to assist families in Turkey.

ASLI TUN
Asli Tun is a freshman from Ankara, Turkey. She was in Istanbul during the earthquake where she felt the tremors and saw evidence of the cracked streets. Tun has been directly affected by the tragedy in Turkey—a friend, her friend's 5-year old brother, grandmother and grandfather perished in the earthquake. Her father is the second consul at Turkish Embassy in Washington, D.C.

ALIA CHUBAK
Alia Chubak is of Turkish descent and is a senior at GW. She spent the summer studying in Istanbul and boarded an airplane back to the U.S. just 16 hours before the earthquake. She has been in contact with friends and family in Turkey through telephone and E-mail.

YASEMIN AKDUMAN
Yasemin Akduman is from Istanbul and is pursuing an MBA. She is in constant communication with friends and family in Turkey. She reports that friends in Istanbul can smell the remnants of the oil refinery fire and they are living out of cars in fear of aftershocks.

LEVENT YANIK
Levent Yanik is from Adana, Turkey and is pursuing a Ph.D. in physics. He is the president of the Assembly of Turkish Student Association in the Washington D.C. area, which has more than 2,000 members.
