BACKGROUND: GW's sketch comedy group, Recess, decided that the nation's capital is the perfect setting for a much-needed comedy festival. After performing at BS2 in Austin, and at Skidmore College's National College Comedy Festival, Recess has created the global behemoth that is "SLATE: THE WORLD COLLEGE COMEDY FESTIVAL." Upright Citizens Brigade, originally from Chicago, dishes out hysterical sketch comedy and long-form improvisation during its weekly shows in New York. Upright performs regularly on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and will be premiering its new show after "South Park" on Comedy Central this fall. "South Park" is Comedy Central's highest-rated cable program in history. SLATE will showcase some original episodes, as well as a classic. The New York Comedy Film Festival, an annual showcase for the best in comedic film, is providing SLATE with some fantastic shorts.

Located four blocks from the White House, The George Washington University was created by an Act of Congress in 1821. Today, GW is the largest institution of higher education in the nation's capital. The University offers comprehensive programs of undergraduate and graduate liberal arts study as well as degree programs in medicine, law, engineering, education, business/public management and international affairs. Each year GW enrolls a diverse population of 19,000 undergraduate, graduate and profe ssional students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and some 100 countries.
