Background:
Spain’s
hottest contemporary flamenco company, Ballet Flamenco Sara Baras, debuts
“Mariana Pineda,” portraying the heroine whose story was brought to the stage by
Federico García
Lorca. This large-scale production
with an original score by Manolo Sanlúcar, features 13 musicians and 10
dancers.
Two
of the leading Gypsy exponents of the traditional flamenco puro share the
stage in a mesmerizing D.C. premiere.
Farruquito, Spain’s young dance phenomenon, and the electrifying Juana
Amaya, one of the most important dancers of her generation, are accompanied by
two additional dancers and six musicians.
World-renowned
flamenco guitarist and multiple Grammy winner Tomatito has performed with Paco
de Lucía, Camaron de la Isla, Enrique Morente, Antonio Canales and Frank
Sinatra, among others. Joining him
in this rare appearance are dancer José Fernandez, singer el Potito and
Tomatito’s musical ensemble, all embodying an affinity for the gypsy
spirit.
