GW TAPS MARISELA E. MARTINEZ TO LEAD MULTICULTURAL STUDENT SERVICES CENTER

WASHINGTON - The George Washington University Dean of Students Office named Marisela E. Martinez as director of the Multicultural Student Services Center (MSSC).  Martinez joins GW from Davenport University in Grand Rapids, MI, where she served as the director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

As head of the MSSC, Martinez will oversee the operation and administration of programs which provide academic, personal support and community building for pre-college, undergraduate and graduate multicultural students, as well as overall leadership for the larger GW community.

"Marisela is the right person to lead the Multicultural Student Services Center into the future,” said Linda Donnels, associate vice president and dean of students.  “She brings tremendous energy to her role and a great commitment to diversity initiatives on campus.  I’m sure students and faculty alike will be impressed with her spirit, dedication and depth of knowledge in diverse cultures.  I expect we will continue to see excellent services and innovative changes for our students and the entire campus community under her tenure.”

Marisela received her J.D. degree from the Loyola University Chicago School of Law and her B.A. degree from the University of Michigan with majors in Psychology and African American Studies.  She was also a research fellow at the University of Witswaterand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Multicultural Student Services Center provides a wide-range of services, educational programming, and social and cultural activities to enhance the multicultural ideals of cultural heritage, racial understanding, academic excellence and continuous personal development. Through the Center, GW students, faculty, and staff gain a greater understanding and insight into the many cultures that exists at GW, in America, and around the world.
