Background:

The D.C. International Improvisation Festival introduces audiences to diverse approaches to improvisation as a performing art and provides artists with opportunities for networking and exchange.  Over the past seven years, the festival has successfully presented performances in theaters and site-specific venues throughout the Washington, D.C. area.  The festival was founded by dance artist Maida Withers, GW professor of dance, and is currently co-curated by Withers; Cyrus Khambatta (theatre/dance); Sharon Mansur (dance); Daniel Burkholder (contact improvisation); and Peter Fraize (music).  The festival is supported in part by GW’s Department of Theatre and Dance, GW’s Department of Music, Joy of Motion, the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Maida Withers Dance Construction Company.
