University Elliott School of International Affairs, will discuss recent
changes in human rights law in Costa Rica as part of the GW
Law School Enrichment Lecture Series.

Background:
Now in its 22nd year, the
Enrichment Program was established to enhance the extracurricular intellectual
life of the Law School. Previous speakers include Supreme Court Justices Antonin
Scalia, Sandra Day O'Connor, Anthony M. Kennedy, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg; former
Senator Bill Bradley; Congressman Barney Frank; columnist George Will; attorney
Alan Dershowitz; and Assistant Attorney General Joel Klein.
President
Rodriguez’s experience with the Costa Rican government includes his term as
president (1998-2000); presidential candidate and leading member of the Social
Christian Party (1994-98); congressman in the Legislative Assembly (1990-94);
president of the Legislative Assembly (1991-92); minister of the presidency
(1970); and minister of planning (1968-69).
Rodriguez also has a
distinguished academic background. He was a visiting professor of economics at
the Institute for International Studies, University of California, Berkeley
(1969), and has been a professor of economics at the University of Costa Rica
since 1963 and at the Universidad Autonoma de Centro America since 1978.
