GW'S ELLIOTT SCHOOL NAMES GORDON ADAMS VISITING PROFESSOR

Washington - The Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University has named Dr. Gordon Adams a visiting professor of international affairs and director of the Security Policy Studies Program. Currently deputy director of the International Institute for Security Studies in London, Dr. Adams' appointment begins August 1.

One of this country's most respected analysts and practitioners in the field of international security, Dr. Adams is well known as the creator and director of the Defense Budget Project in Washington, D.C. The Project was the first policy organization to specialize in the analysis of how the United States allocates defense and national security resources.

Elliott School Dean Harry Harding warmly welcomed the appointment, saying, "I am delighted that Gordon Adams will be joining us. His broad experience in academic, non-profit and government settings makes him ideally qualified for teaching, research and outreach at a professional school of international affairs. I believe he will excite students and public audiences alike during his stay at the Elliott School."

Dr. Adams served as associate director for National Security and International Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget, under Leon Panetta and Alice Rivlin, from 1993-1997. For his outstanding service at OMB, the Department of Defense awarded him its highest civilian honor, the Medal for Distinguished Public Service, and named him to the Secretary of Defense's Policy Board.

He has authored "The Iron Triangle: The Politics of Defense Contracting" (1982) and co-authored "Defense Spending and the American Economy" (1990) and he has been a regular contributor to the editorial pages of the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal Europe, and Defense News. He appears regularly on a wide range of radio and television programs, including the BBC, CNN and ABC, discussing international security issues.

Dr. Adams received his B.A. from Stanford University and earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in political science and international relations from Columbia University. He has taught at both Columbia and Rutgers Universities and managed research and training programs at the Social Science Research Council in New York.

The Elliott School is The George Washington University's professional school of international affairs. The School trains exceptional men and women in the theory and practice of international affairs. It is home to a widely respected faculty and four research centers, which provide in-depth analysis of an extensive range of international economic, scientific, and political issues.
