CHIEF JUSTICE WILLIAM REHNQUIST TO ADDRESS GW LAW SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT MAY 28
Background: A member of the Supreme Court since 1972, William Rehnquist was appointed chief justice in 1986. His law career began after graduating from Stanford Law School in 1952. From 1952 to 1953, Rehnquist served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Associate Justice Robert H. Jackson. The following year, Rehnquist settled in Phoenix, Arizona and engaged in the practice of law for 16 years. In 1969, President Richard Nixon appointed him assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel in the Department of Justice. Located four blocks from the White House, The George Washington University was created by an Act of Congress in 1821. Today, GW is the largest institution of higher education in the nation's capital. The University offers comprehensive programs of undergraduate and graduate liberal arts study as well as degree programs in medicine, law, engineering, education, business/public management and international affairs. Each year, GW enrolls a diverse population of 19,000 undergraduates, graduate and professional students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 120 countries. Access for media set-up begins at 12:00 p.m. in the lower level of the Smith Center. The lower level entrance is located at the corner of 22nd and G Streets, NW. Chief Justice Rehnquist will be speaking within the first 30 minutes and his remarks are expected to last 20 minutes.
