SOUTH AFRICAN AMBASSADOR SHEILA SISULU TO SPEAK AT GW
Visit on May 4 is Part of GW's Ambassadors Lecture Series

Her Excellency Sheila Violet Makate Sisulu, South African ambassador to the United States, will speak as part of The George Washington University's Ambassador Lecture Series. Her visit is sponsored by GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg and the University's Program Board, in cooperation with GW's Graduate School of Political Management. Following her lecture, Ambassador Sisulu will take questions from the audience.

Background:

Sheila Violet Makate Sisulu was appointed in 1999 as South Africa's ambassador to the United States. For the previous two years, she was consul general at the South African Consulate General in New York. After the first democratic elections in 1994, Ms. Sisulu served as special adviser to the minister of education. She was responsible for advising the minister on special projects including youth, health, AIDS and early childhood education. She also helped establish a youth commission in the Office of the Deputy President.

Located four blocks from the White House, The George Washington University was created by an Act of Congress in 1821. Today, GW is the largest institution of higher education in the nation's capital. The University offers comprehensive programs of undergraduate and graduate liberal arts study as well as degree programs in medicine, law, engineering, education, business/public management and international affairs. Each year GW enrolls a diverse population of 19,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and some 100 countries.
