GW BANGLADESH CULTURAL SOCIETY TO SPONSOR BOISHAKH 2K1 CULTURAL SHOW AND CONFERENCE APRIL 21

The GW Bangladesh Cultural Society will celebrate Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, for members of The George Washington University community as well as for Washington Bangladeshi residents. This event will include a Cultural Awareness Conference and a Cultural Show.

Background:

The Cultural Awareness Conference will include discussion of political unsettlement in Bangladesh; environmental awareness; acid burning of rape victims and females from underdeveloped areas of Bangladesh; and the Bangladesh Caucus in the U.S. Senate and how it will improve relationships and representation between Bangladesh and America. Guest speakers for the Conference include Golam Akhter, the Bangladesh Human Rights Movement; and Badrul Haque, chair of Bangladesh-American Foundation.

The Cultural Show will feature Bengali modern, baul and band songs performed live by various artists. Performances will also include cultural dances and Bangladeshi-American hip-hop/pop dances that represent a fusion of the Bengali-American culture. There will also be a Bangladeshi fashion show showcasing the latest Bangladeshi and American trends.

The Bangladeshi Cultural Society, in existence for two years, has proved to be one of the most active student organizations on campus. The organization has over 60 members who serve the needs of Bangladeshi and fellow students in the GW community and D.C. area with various events, socials and workshops that focus on Bangladesh and Bengali culture.
