COMMUNITARIAN AMITAI ETZIONI TO DISCUSS AND SIGN HIS LATEST BOOK "NEXT: THE ROAD TO THE GOOD SOCIETY" AT GW BOOKSTORE FEB. 12
Background: A social movement that places the importance of society ahead of the unfettered rights of the individual, "communitarianism" has witnessed expanded coverage in the news. A January 31 Washington Post cover story labeled President Bush's ideology as communitarian in nature. As the nation's leading scholar on communitarianism, Professor Etzioni has published 19 books including "The Limits of Privacy," and "The New Golden Rule: Community and Morality in a Democratic Society," which won the 1997 Simon Wiesenthal Center Tolerance Book Award. In his latest book, "Next," Etzioni argues that both parties have failed to address today's pressing domestic issues, and debates such questions as: Has the time come for more regulation (such as for HMOs or the Internet), or less? Are faith-based groups substitutes for the government for the delivery of services? Should we nurture virtues -- and if so, which ones? How can we make our politics less corrupt? -- GW -- ©1996-2004
