Background:
Adam
Clayton Powell Jr. was the first African American to represent New York in
Congress, a post he held from 1945 to 1971. A civil rights leader, Powell was a
delegate
to the Democratic National Convention from New York in 1952. In 1966
he
was cited
for contempt of court for refusing to pay damages in a lawsuit against him. On
February 28, 1967, he was expelled from the U.S. House of Representatives on
charges of unbecoming conduct and misusing public funds. The U.S. Supreme Court
overturned the expulsion in 1969. Stars of the Showtime/Paramount film include
Harry Lennix (“Five
Heartbeats,” “Matrix 2 & 3,” “Get On the Bus,” “ER") and
Vanessa
L. Williams (“Soul
Food,” “Shaft”).
On hand to discuss the work will be the film’s producers Geoffrey
L. Garfield (GSPM alum) and Monty Ross.
