BACKGROUND:
As commanders-in-chief, politicians and ordinary citizens, American presidents have been the target of intense scrutiny by reporters; admiration or condemnation by historians and voters; and fear and mistrust by detractors. Since its inception in 1968, Gelman Library's Special Collections Research Center has been amassing collections of primary or secondary documents generated by, for or about over half the United States presidents. The variety and scope of these documents provide a crucial academic dimension to the discourse, allowing researchers to supplement (or challenge) traditional histories and accepted viewpoints with their own conclusions.
