MORE THAN 2,500 GW FRESHMEN VOLUNTEER TO SERVE D.C.-AREA VETERANS
First Annual Freshman Day of Service Culminates in 9/11 Candle Light Vigil
SEPT. 11, 2009

EVENT:  

More than 2,500 GW freshmen will dedicate Sept. 11 to community service and civic engagement throughout the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and Maryland. GW's first annual Freshman Day of Service is an opportunity to enhance students' education through civic engagement. This event coincides with the last day of President Obama's Summer of Service, as well as the ServiceNation initiative to turn a day of tragedy into a day of service.

WHEN/WHERE

Friday, Sept. 11, 2009; Noon - 7 p.m.

Schedule of Events
Noon - 12:30 p.m.: Opening ceremony; University Yard (H St. between 21st and 22nd streets)

1:30 - 4:30 p.m.: Students will travel to service sites, including:
Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS)
Armed Forces Retirement Home
United Service Organization
Vinson Hall
Washington Parks and People
Anacostia Watershed Society
Capital Area Foodbank
Mount Vernon Triangle
We Are Family
So Others Might Eat, Shalom House
Transitional Housing Corporation
Casey Trees
Emmaus Services for the Aging

5 p.m.: Celebrate cookout; University Yard (H St. between 21st and 22nd streets)

6:30 p.m.: 9/11 Candlelight Vigil; University Yard (H St. between 21st and 22nd streets)
