BACKGROUND:
The tradition of a Senior Class Gift began in the 1990s to provide graduating students the opportunity to make a lasting impression on the GW community. The Class of 2004 was the first to establish an endowment fund through the Gelman Library Book Fund. Recent classes established such endowments as the Campus Green Fund (2007) and the Spirit Fund (2008). This year, the campaign took a new approach with the introduction of gift designation and an alumni dollar-to-dollar match of senior donations. Gifts this year have supported a variety of campus initiatives, such as student aid, academic programs, student organizations and athletics. The matching funds will support a textbook scholarship and plaque in honor of the late Eddie Bieber, affectionately known as "Old Man Schenley."
The Senior Class Gift is a student initiative comprised of the Senior Class Gift coordinator and a committee of dedicated students, which oversees fundraising, publicity and events. The campaign, thus far, has raised more than $50,000, including student gifts, the alumni match and other fundraising efforts. An exact dollar amount will be announced at the event. More than 25 percent of this year's senior class has supported the class gift.
