Founded in 1926 by Koç's grandfather, Koç Holdings' core businesses are in the energy, automotive, durable goods, and financial services sectors. The group has been a driving force of the Turkish economy with total sales that make up about nine percent of Turkey's GDP and account for 20 percent of the revenue generated by the Turkish private sector and exports that comprise 11 percent of Turkey's total exports.
In addition to his work as chairman, Koç is affiliated with numerous business and not-for-profit organizations. He is a member of the board of the Vehbi Koç Foundation, which was founded in 1969 as the first private Turkish foundation focused on education, health, and culture. He also is on the Board of Trustees of the Educational Volunteers Foundation in Turkey. Among his business memberships are the J.P. Morgan International Council, the Rolls Royce International Advisory Board, the National Bank of Kuwait International Advisory Board, and the High Advisory Board of the Turkish Businessmen's and Industrialists' Association. The Koç family was honored by the World Monuments Fund with the 2007 Hadrian Award for their philanthropy and support for museums and research in history, art, and culture.
The Robert P. Maxon Lectureship was established through an endowment gift from Dorothy Maxon to The George Washington University School of Business in honor of her husband, GW alumnus Robert P. Maxon. The annual lecture features prominent executives and academics addressing topics on contemporary global management issues.
