Deborah Avant, director of GW's Institute for Global and International Studies and professor of political science and international affairs, will discuss how agenda setters, contractors, professional associations, and others are changing global political life in a lecture hosted by The George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs. Light refreshments will be served.

BACKGROUND:
While most scholars have examined states as the key governors and looked at international organizations as their governing tools, Avant will discuss the wide variety of actors who seek to affect activity on important issues. These actors want new rules to solve problems, change outcomes, and transform international life.
Avant is an expert is in international relations, military organizations, national security, transnational security, and the role of private sector in conflict and security. Her research has focused on civil-military relations, military change, and the politics of controlling violence. Avant's most recent book is The Market for Force: The Consequences of Privatizing Security (Cambridge University Press, 2005). She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego.
