On the Front Lines of Student Veterans' Lives

Senior Brian Hawthorne is a chameleon. He blends in with his fellow classmates at The George Washington University, studying hard like any other student. With similar ease, he stands alongside his army comrades during intense training or service in Iraq. It is the intersection of these two lives that has earned Hawthorne national recognition.

In June 2009, the United States Department of Defense recognized Army Reserves Staff Sergeant Hawthorne, a bronze star recipient, as one of its Heroes of the Week for his lifesaving efforts abroad and organizational accomplishments at GW. The Department's "Heroes" are military men and women identified for their efforts above and beyond the call of duty in the Global War on Terror.

Almost two years ago in Iraq, an explosively formed penetrating device struck the convey vehicles his unit was traveling in. As the dust settled, Hawthorne quickly assessed the situation and bravely took action to help his fellow soldiers to safety.

Hawthorne's leadership skills have extended beyond the battlefield with the creation of GW Veterans, an organization that brings together veterans from all branches of military service and offers resources for a smooth transition into civilian life.

"The decision to form GW Veterans came from talking with other veterans on campus and realizing the need to develop a sustained and solid voice to advocate our position," said Hawthorne.

Since its inception last year, GW Veterans has sponsored a wide-range of events and campaigned tirelessly for improving veterans experience on campus. In the upcoming year, Hawthorne hopes to have the organization sponsor on-campus "Ask a Veteran" events, work in collaboration with GW on a Veteran's Day celebration and take part in the 9/11 campus vigil.

In addition to GW Veterans, Hawthorne remains actively involved in the reserves and is currently serving as the D.C. director of Student Veterans of America. He plans to enjoy his last year at GW with the knowledge that in the 2010 he will be re-commissioned to serve overseas once again.
