GW STUDENT RECEIVES HONORABLE MENTION FROM
BARRY M. GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
WASHINGTON--Laura Chambers, a junior at The George Washington University, received an honorable mention from the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Undergraduate Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program.
Raised in Ann Arbor, Mich., Ms. Chambers is majoring in both public health and biology in the University's Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. Among her many academic achievements evaluated by the scholarship program is her research proposal, entitled "Immune Cell Glycolsylation and Trafficking to Neuroblastoma Tissue," under the direction of Susan Ceryak, associate research professor of pharmacology and physiology.
Ms. Chambers plans to pursue a Master in Public Health and doctorate degrees. Her interest is focused on conducting research in analytical epidemiology, specifically cancer and infectious disease surveillance.
Up to 300 Goldwater scholarships are awarded each year to qualified nominees in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and, considered as a single entity, Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually.
Established in 1986 in honor of the former Senator Barry M. Goldwater, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields.
