BACKGROUND:

The George Washington University offered its first teacher preparation courses through the
Columbian College in 1904. A Division of Education was established in 1907, and a Teachers College was organized in 1909. Twenty years later the college was renamed the School of Education and advanced study opportunities were added to its undergraduate teacher preparation courses. In the 1970s, the school shifted its focus to graduate education, and in 1994, the school was renamed the Graduate School of Education and Human Development. Today, GSEHD houses three departments, offering 20 master?s degree programs and six doctoral degree programs in the areas of teacher preparation, special education, educational leadership, counseling and human and organizational studies. GSEHD has grown to include more than 70 full-time faculty and over 1,600 students.
