The George Washington University Hospital was featured in a ComputerWorld article, discussing how the wireless network at the new hospital building improves patient care (12/16).

 

GW juniors Matt Mandell and Tim Calise were featured in articles in the Educational Marketer (12/16) and The Washington Post (12/19), discussing the used college textbook business they created, VarsityText.com.

 

The National Transportation Safety Board training center at The George Washington University Virginia Campus was featured in a Washington Post brief about the hiring of Frank Richey as its president and academic dean (12/16 and 12/19).

 

The National Security Archive at GW was featured in an United Press International (12/20) wire story about the U.S. dealings with India, Pakistan and China during the Bangladesh War of 1971.  The story appeared in, among others The Times of India (12/21).

 

An unnamed manager in GW’s Information Technology Department was quoted in a Washington Post story about how a dispute with America Online, Inc. will disrupt Internet access provided by Cogent Communications, the Internet service provider used by GW (12/28).

 

Hibba Abugideiri, assistant professor of history, international affairs and honors, was quoted by The Jakarta Post about the growth of Islam in the United States (12/18).

 

Gordon Adams, director of the Elliott School’s security policy studies program and professor of the practice of international affairs, discussed the implications of a missile defense program for defense contractors on National Public Radio’s Marketplace (12/17).  He also was interviewed by the Army Times for an article on U.S. relations with China, Russia and NATO.

 

Sean Aday, assistant professor of media and public affairs, was paraphrased by the Christian Science Monitor about the media coverage of Trent Lott’s comments (12/17).

 

Tyler Anbinder, associate professor of history, appeared on the History Channel (12/16), NPR’s All Things Considered (12/23) and the Discovery Channel discussing his book “Five Points” in relation to the new film “Gangs of New York”.

 

Christopher Arterton, dean of the graduate school of public management and professor of political management, was quoted by the Christian Science Monitor about the effects of Al Gore dropping out of the 2004 presidential race (12/17).

 

John Banzhaf, professor of law, was quoted in a story in the Broward Daily Business Review, Miami Daily Business Review and Palm Beach Daily Business Review about mounting litigation against fast food companies (12/18).  He was also quoted in a Newhouse News Service article that appeared in, among others, The Time-Picayune about lawsuits against fast food companies (12/27).

 

Jerome Barron, Harold H. Greene Professor of Law, was quoted in an Associated Press story about the Australian high court allowing a suit against a U.S. Internet publisher (12/16).

 

Dr. C. Wayne Callaway, associate clinical professor at GW Medical Center, was quoted by The New York Times about methods of dieting (12/18).

 

Dr. Gene Cohen, director of George Washington University's Center on Aging, Health and Humanities, was quoted by The Washington Times about progress being made towards fighting Alzheimer’s disease (12/17).

 

Michael Cornfield, director of the institute for Politics, Democracy and the Internet, was quoted in an Associated Press story that appeared in, among others, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, about the use of the Internet to mobilize activists (12/24).

 

Charles Craver, professor of law and Leroy Sorenson Merrifield Research Professor of Law, was quoted in a Knight-Ridder Tribune Business News article that appeared in, among others, the Detroit Free Press, about methods of boosting personal income (12/26).

 

Thomas Dienes, Lyle T. Alverson Professor of Law, was quoted by The Scotsman (12/18) and the South China Morning Post (12/19) about what former congressman Gary Condit would have to prove in his libel lawsuit against the press.

 

Amitai Etzioni, GW University Professor, was quoted in a story by The Washington Post about the status of the volunteer “Citizen Corps” President Bush proposed to provide help in the case of a terrorist attack (12/23).  He was also quoted in a story by The Washington Times about how volunteering helps the well-being of the volunteers (12/25).  Finally, he was quoted in an article that appeared in The Washington Post and The Seattle Times about the missed opportunity by President Bush to rally the nation to volunteer in the wake of September 11 (12/26).

 

Adriane Fugh-Berman, assistant clinical professor in the departments of Medicine and Health Care Sciences, and a study she co-authored regarding alternatives to hormone replacement therapy were profiled in Women’s Health Weekly (12/26).

 

Dr. Lawrence J. Green, assistant professor of dermatology, had a letter he wrote featured in The Washington Post “Health Interactions” section in response to the Dec. 17 Post article “Got Wrinkles, Go Fish” (12/24).

 

Darryl Jenkins, director of GW’s Aviation Institute, was quoted by The Star Ledger about the future of United Airlines (12/22).  He was also quoted in an article by The Canadian Press that appeared in, among others, The Montreal Gazette (12/24), Winnipeg Free Press (12/26) and the Hamilton Spectator (12/27), about the two-for-one seat sales offered by Canadian airline Jetsgo Corp.  Finally, he was quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle about how the December 31 deadline for airports to screen all checked baggage would impact travelers (12/31).

 

Orin Kerr, associate professor of law, was quoted by The New York Times about corporate security officers' positions on releasing customers' records to law enforcement becoming more lenient in the wake of September 11 (12/18).  Kerr was also quoted in a Business Week Online article about a court case involving digital copyright laws (12/23).

 

Jeanne Lambrew, associate professor of health policy, was quoted in Reuters Health E-Line story about how tax credits will do little to help low-income women in purchasing health coverage (12/18).

 

Steven Livingston, associate professor of media and public affairs and international affairs, appeared on NPR’s On the Media discussing information technology and war reporting (12/27).

 

Kip Lornell, professor of Africana studies, was interviewed on camera for a documentary film focused on the "9:30 Club" and its role in presenting popular music in the District of Columbia (12/19).

 

Marisela Martinez, director of the Multicultural Student Services Center, was quoted in a Washington Times article about whether minority programs cause segregation on U.S. college campuses (12/16).

 

Sean Murphy, associate professor of law, was mentioned in a Lloyd’s List International article as an expert witness who will provide testimony in the case of Russian crewman who are being held in Canada (12/20).

 

Wendy Naro, research scientist, was quoted in two separate articles in the Charleston Gazette about a study conducted by GW concerning the growth in West Virginia’s inmate population (12/17).

 

Richard Pierce, Lyle T. Alverson Professor of Law, was featured in stories by Electric Utility Week, Inside Energy, Inside F.E.R.C. and Power Markets Week about setting universal standards for liability protection in the energy market (12/16).

 

Jerrold Post, professor of the practice of psychiatry, political psychology and international affairs, discussed Saddam Hussein on an ABC-radio (Los Angeles) talk program (12/20) and Fox New Channel (12/21).

Christine Puchalski, assistant professor of medicine, was quoted in a Christian Science Monitor story about forgiveness being positive for one’s health (12/19).

Jeffrey Rosen, associate professor of law, had two of his quotes concerning terrorism featured in an IDG Data end of the year wrap-up story, “2002 in quotes” (12/23 and 12/30).

Sara Rosenbaum, professor of health policy and director of the center for health policy research, was quoted by The New York Times in an article about the repeal of a Maine law requiring lower drug prices (12/25).

Walter Rowe, professor of forensic science, was quoted by the Associated Press (12/16) and The New York Times (12/19) about how the incorrect testimony of a forensic expert led to the jailing of an innocent man.

Stephen Saltzburg, Howrey Professor of Trial Advocacy, Litigation, and Professional Responsibility, was quoted by the South China Morning Post in an article about the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice who wrote his summary of the marital dispute case in rhymes (12/22).

Robert Shesser, professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine was featured on ABC’s Good Morning America discussing his concerns with using the smallpox vaccine (12/19).

Ambassador David Shinn, adjunct professor at the Elliott School, was quoted in an ABCNews.com article about President Bush’s war on terror (12/18).  He also appeared on the BBC radio program Analysis discussing the Horn of Africa.

Stephen Joel Trachtenburg, president of The George Washington University and professor of public administration, was featured in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article about diversity plans in the nation’s campuses (12/22). 

Jonathon Turley, J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro professor of public service law, wrote a commentary featured in The Los Angeles Times about cameras in the courtroom (12/18).  He was also quoted in a National Journal article about Attorney General John Ashcroft’s policies post September 11 (12/21).  Turley was also quoted in a Washington Times article about colleges artificially engineering the racial mix on their campuses (12/30).  He also wrote an Op-Ed that appeared in The Los Angeles Times (12/16) and The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel (12/30) about current church vs. state legal battles.  

Dr. Shawna C. Willey, director of The Breast Center at GW’s Medical Center, was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show discussing new procedures used to detect breast cancer (12/19).
