The Washington Post covered the 54th Annual Flemming Awards presented at GW on June 5, 2003.  The awards honor individuals with three to 15 years of government experience who make extraordinary contributions to the federal government” (6/5).

 

GW was mentioned in a Washington Post article discussing the university’s support for a bill that would allow campus departments to extend their jurisdiction through "cooperative agreements" with the D.C. police.  This would allow security personal to patrol streets directly around the campus (6/5).

 

GW was mentioned and Lance J. Hoffman, distinguished research professor and professor of engineering and applied science, was also quoted in a Washington Post article regarding how technology classes are making a comeback in college curriculum (6/12).  The article also ran in Newsbytes News Network (6/12).

 

GW’s “Summer Tour” program was profiled in a Wall Street Journal article.  “Summer Tour” is a two-week program that offers a variety of classes for children to participate (6/13).

 

The GW Washington Forum radio show covered such topics as the Jayson Blair/New York Times scandal with SMPA Professor Steven Roberts (6/1); Middle East peace efforts with Elliott School Professors Walter Reich and Nathan Brown (6/8); and the state of the aviation industry with Josh Marks of the GW Aviation Institute (6/15).

 

John F. Banzhaf, professor of law, was mentioned in an article in Investor’s Business Daily that discussed lawsuits against fast food chains (6/12).  He also appeared on CNN: Crossfire to debate the topic (6/13).

 

Steve Billet, associate professorial lecturer in political management, was quoted in a Washington Post article about the skills needed to become a successful lobbyist (6/8).

 

Allida Black, assistant professorial lecturer in history, was interviewed by NPR’s: “Talk of the Nation” about the parallels between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Eleanor Roosevelt (6/11).

 

Michael Cornfield, research director of the institute for Politics, Democracy and the Internet, was quoted in The Washington Post regarding the left-leaning advocacy group Moveon.org and its potential support for the democratic presidential candidate (6/14).

 

Charles Craver, Leroy Sorenson Merrifield Research Professor of Law, was quoted in The New York Times regarding labor disputes within the teacher’s union in the Miami-Dade County in Florida (6/1).  He was also quoted in a PR Newswire discussing the Supreme Courts recent ruling on discrimination cases (6/12).

 

Robert Cutler, professor of engineering science, was profiled in a Washington Post article regarding his book, “Mackay's Flying Fortress”, about a mysterious WWII plane crash that took place in Australia (6/12).  He also discussed his book with the Gold Coast Bulletin (Australia) (6/12) the Australian Associated Press General News (6/13), The Star-Ledger (Newark, NJ) (6/13) and in the Townsville Bulletin (Australia) (6/14). 

 

Bernard Demczuk, assistant vice president for District of Columbia affairs, was quoted in a Joins.com article regarding the World Culture Open Preparatory Committee, a festival that was held on the GW campus (6/3).

 

Doreen DiPasquale, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery, was quoted in a Business Wire article titled “High-Volume Compression and Encryption of DICOM Images” (6/9).

 

Amitai Etzioni, GW University Professor, wrote an article featured in American Enterprise discussing the need for Americans to have national I.D. cards (6/1).  He also co-wrote the article “No Talk of the Town” with Elizabeth Tulis, which was published in the Legal Times.  The article discusses new regulations within the Federal Communications Commission (6/2).  Finally, Etzioni was quoted in The Record regarding the recent departures of two New York Times editors (6/6). 

 

Adriane Fugh-Berman, associate clinical professor of medicine and assistant clinical professor of medicine, was quoted by Reuters Health E-Line discussing the effectiveness of herbal supplements claiming to increase bust size (6/2).

 

Harry Harding, dean of the Elliot School of International Affairs, was quoted in the Australian Financial Review discussing the challenges that are currently facing the Asia-Pacific region (6/13).

 

Keith Holterman, assistant dean for health sciences and assistant professor of emergency medicine, was quoted in the Times-Picayune (New Orleans, LA) discussing the steps hospitals need to take to prepare for terrorist attacks (6/3).

 

Elliot Hirshman, chair and Thelma Hunt Professor of Psychology, was quoted in Clinical Trials Week on research results that found “decision processing is a factor that affects hormonal influence on memory” (6/9).  The same article ran in Women’s Health Weekly (6/12).

 

Darryl Jenkins, director of the Aviation Institute, was quoted in Corporate Meetings & Incentives discussing the troubling state of the airline industry (6/1).  He was also quoted in The News Herald regarding major U.S. cities desire to bring Southwest Airlines to their airports (6/5).  He appeared on NPR’s “Marketplace” discussing the expansion of the JetBlue airline  (6/10).  He was also quoted discussing JetBlue and other airlines in the Denver Post (6/11).  Finally, he was quoted in The Washington Times discussing the relocation of US Airways (6/13).

 

Orin Kerr, associate professor of law, was quoted in an article in the National Review regarding the Patriot Act (6/2).

 

Julia Lear, associate research professor of health services management and leader, was a guest on NPR’s “Weekend Edition Sunday.”  The show discussed the public health system and the dental profession’s failing to aid poor children (6/15).

 

John Logsdon, director of the Elliott School’s Space Policy Institute and member of the Columbia Shuttle accident investigation board, was quoted in The Baltimore Sun (6/1) and The Seattle Times (6/2) about sending satellites to Mars in the upcoming months.  He was also quoted in the following outlets discussing the finalized Columbia accident reports: AP Newswire (6/7, 6/8, 6/12), The New York Times (6/8), The Star-Ledger (Newark, NJ) (6/8), Dow Jones International News (6/12), AP Online (6/12), the Pittsburgh-Post Gazette (6/13), the Houston Chronicle (6/13), in The Star-Ledger (6/13) and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (6/13).

 

Jarol Manheim, professor of media and public affairs and of political science, was quoted in International Press Service regarding the American Enterprise Institute new focus on international non-governmental organizations (6/12).

 

Josh Marks, associate director of the Aviation Institute, was quoted in an AP Newswire discussing Midwest Airlines (6/15).

 

Sara Melendez, visiting professor of non-profit management, was the keynote speaker at Southern Growth Policies Board annual meeting at the Beau Rivage Resort.  The article was in the Sun Herald (Biloxi, Mississippi) (6/2).

 

Lawrence Mitchell, professor of law, was on NPR’s “Morning Edition” discussing the sentencing of Samuel Waksal, the founder and CEO of ImClone Systems (6/11).

 

Sean D. Murphy, associate professor of law, was quoted in a The New York Times article discussing the rights of Zacarias Moussaoui to question other imprisoned al Queda members (6/2).

 

Susan Phillips, dean of the School of Business and Public Management, co-anchored CNN's "Market Call" (6/13). She provided commentary about the economy and discussed how business schools can influence productivity and corporate ethics.

 

Dr. Jerrold Post, professor of psychiatry, political psychology and international affairs and director of GW’s Political Psychology Program, was quoted in Business Week in an article discussing whether businesses should hire ex-hackers (6/9).

 

Bernard Reich, professor of political science and international affairs, was quoted by the Agence France-Presse regarding President Bush’s plans to hold a summit with Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas and Israel's leader Ariel Sharon (6/1).  He was quoted again by Agence France-Presse regarding the relationship of President Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (6/2).

 

Walter Reich, Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Professor of International Affairs, Ethics and Human Behavior, was quoted in The Toronto Star discussing the Bush administrations plans to reshape the Middle East (6/8).

 

Jeffrey Rosen, associate professor of law, wrote an New York Times op-ed, “How I Learned to Love Quotas,” discussing his thoughts and feelings on affirmative action (6/1).  He was also quoted in an Associated Press story profiling Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer (6/8).  The story also ran in AP Online (6/8, 6/9), The Grand Rapids Press (6/9), The Seattle Times (6/10) and The Recorder (6/12).

 

Sara Rosenbaum, interim chair of the Department of Health Policy and director of the Center for Health Policy Research, was quoted in US News & World Report in an article discussing senior citizens traveling to Maine to fill drug prescriptions (6/9).
