Micro message from Dr. Roberts:
Hi Dr. Roberts,
I was wondering if we are responsible for incubation times and treatment
for
the exam.
Thanks.
Hi there,
The incubation periods that are important are those that distinguish
one disease from another. A good example is the Eneteric Infections
lecture: Staph and Bacillus species that cause GI disease involve preformed
toxin leading to clinical manifestations very quicly after ingestion,
while diseases like Salmonella or Shigella have longer incubation periods.
Obviously you don't need the exact number of hours, but whether it is
short or long.
As far as treatment, we won't list a number of antibiotics and have
you pick one as the treatment, however treatment principles are very
important. For example the fact that you would need prolonged therapy
for endocarditis with a bacteriocidal agent or the fact that early stages
of Lyme such as the ECM rash are treated with oral antibiotics while
advances disease involving the CNS is treated with intravenous antibiotics.
For Psych
Hey everyone,
In preparation for the psych patient interview on Thursday, I typed up
the interview
template that is in the front of our psych manuals. I thought it might
be helpful to be able to write stuff under the appropriate headings during
the interview...hopefully it will help the write-up go more quickly.

Hey Guys,
...
Also on another note for the written test, I'm attaching a cranial
nerve schematic that I put together that breaks down each cranial
nerve with respect to the ear, nasal cavity, eye, phraynx etc. Don't
be alarmed by the small font though...I just wanted to fit it all
on 1 page. And I apologize in advance for any typos:o).
Thanks a lot and good luck to all of you on exams!

Hi you all-
I had heard form a couple of you about Neuro-I hope some of these
files are applicable and can help you all out. Some of the people
in out class had done some of these.
One thing that helped me with CN especially was tying it in with POM.
If I was doing the eye exam (H), then I would think about which CN
were allowing the patient to be able to follow. Or, if someone was
walking down the stairs, and had to tilt their head to one side, then
what CN was wrong. Kinda working backwards from the problem at hand
Just keep on truckin-you are almost finished with your first semester.
That is awesome!
If I can find anything else, I will send it out
Good Luck
Sincerely,

Classmates,
I combined the Neuro hypothalamus lecture and the Micro pituitary
/ pineal gland lecture into one set of flow charts. (For Micro we
don't always need to know the hypothalamic nucleus but for Neuro
I guess we will (?) -- but I figure it's easiest to learn it all
at once.)
Dr. Chiaramello checked my rough version of this over, and this
final set incorporates her changes, so I'm pretty sure it's good.
Best,
Matt

Subject: correction in parasymp ganglia
in head
Hi guys,
if you haven't already noticed, for the otic ganglion, I placed a
question mark and 'CN VII' beneath the origin of the lesser petrosal
nerve, as I had
yet to arrive at the part in the notes where this was stated. Please
correct this, as the definitive origin of the lesser petrosal nerve
is CN IX.
Thanx!

last email, promise. going over the eye
lecture, i found that the
description of eye development, at the bottom of the first page, was
not
exactly correct. i've corrected it and changed it. it's more detailed
and, better than that, it's correct. the only thing i've left out
is
that the eyes develop from the prosencephalon of the forebrain, but
i
have seen conflicting sources about the exact part of the forbrain
that
forms the eyes--so i left it out b/c the prosencephalon might not
be
correct.

Sorry this is so last minute (internet at home has been down), but
I wanted to forward to you a one-page, all inclusive study guide for
your pbe patient interviews this weekend. If you memorize it and ask
these questions you will be fine...hope it helps. Please ignore a
couple things on the sheet b/c they relate to second year: 1) the
CAGE questions; 2) asking about physical/emotional abuse in relationships.
Hang in there and good luck next week...almost home free to second

Hello everyone,
I made a little summary of the interview parts from our first four
DPS
sessions. I thought it would be easier than flipping through all the
pages. It has examples for some and not others which would have taken
too long (i.e. review of systems) so please supplement it with the
book or POM manual for further detail. And I copied the text verbatim
from that manual so that's my reference.
