Information
Below is some general
information about the Sailing Team that we hope you find informative.
To join, you must be a
current MBA student at the George Washington University, a graduate of the MBA program at
GW or a faculty member of GW's School of Business and Public Management.
While sailing experience is
helpful, you do not need to know how to sail prior to joining the Team. The majority of
new members have never sailed before or have very limited sailing experience.
Membership dues are
$50/semester. Your dues help offset a variety of team costs, the largest of which is boat
rentals (the Team does not presently own its own boats). This fee does not include
optional or unforeseen expenses that may be incurred, such as regatta expenses (airfare,
lodging, entry fees, etc.) or uninsured boat damage. Fortunately, as shrewd and
resourceful MBA students we have demonstrated a capacity to raise enough funds from
generous sponsors, such as Arthur Andersen, Lincoln Motorcars and Proxicom, to offset nearly all of
these expenses.
Previously, the Team has
participated in at least two regattas each year. These are the Fuqua MBA Cup in Newport,
Rhode Island (organized by Duke University) in the fall and the Colonial Cup in Annapolis,
Maryland (organized by the GW MBA Sailing Team) in the spring.
In preparation for these
races and as part of our instructional efforts, team members typically have the
opportunity to sail between six and eight times per semester. Due to boat availability,
the availability of experienced skippers, inclement weather and other impediments
(including your own schedule), there is no guarantee as to the number of times you will
actually sail in a given semester.
The primary means of
communication for the Team is our e-mail listserv. We encourage you to subscribe to the
listserv as soon as possible by sending an e-mail to the following address: listserv@hermes.gwu.edu. Leave the
subject line empty. In the body of the message type: subscribe MBASAIL firstname lastname,
where firstname and lastname are your respective first and last names.
We have meetings about every
two weeks. The meetings are often scheduled just a day or two in advance, so it is
important that you check your e-mail daily. The meetings are typically very casual in
style but an important source information, such as upcoming events and sailing
instruction.
The GW MBA Sailing Team is
comprised of students from all over the globe. We are a very lively bunch of folks who
love to sail and have a great time, and we encourage you to join us. If you have any
