Nepalese Ambassador Discusses New Constitution

On March 17, Ambassador Shankar Sharma of Nepal (center) spoke on “Proposed Assignments of Economic Rights and Natural Resources in the New Constitution of Nepal” and visited with students and faculty members after the lecture.

GW Law School-State Department Conference

GW Law School and the Office of the Legal Adviser, U.S. Department of State, co-sponsored a one-day conference on “The International Law Commission in the 21st Century: What Should It Be Doing to Make a Contemporary Difference?” on March 29. This was the third conference co-hosted by the two institutions during the academic year.


Hon. Marie G. Jacobsson, International Law Commission member and principal legal adviser on international law for Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, speaks on the role of government in ILC Projects. GW Law professor Sean Murphy and University of Cincinnati College of Law professor Jacob Katz Cogan also spoke on the panel.

Celebrating the Work of Jerome Cohen

On Feb. 19, GW Law and Georgetown University Law Center co-hosted a daylong symposium honoring the contributions of New York University law professor Jerome Cohen, considered the “Godfather” of Chinese legal studies. The event, organized by GW Law professor Donald C. Clarke, brought together many China and Asia law experts, practitioners, and students. Professor Cohen also gave a lecture.

International Environmental Law Guest Lecture

Environmental economist Aaron Cosbey gave a lecture on international environmental law and the World Trade Organization to professor Steve Charnovitz’s Advanced International Trade Law class in February. Cosbey is the senior climate change and trade adviser at the International Institute for Sustainable Development and specializes in the areas of trade and sustainable development, international environmental governance, and climate change.

Charlotte Streck, director of Climate Focus, speaks at a recent forum on climate change hosted by GW Law professors Steve Charnovitz and David Freestone. Ms. Streck and professor Freestone discussed the book they recently co-wrote, Legal Aspects of Carbon Trading: Kyoto, Copenhagen, and Beyond (Oxford University Press, 2009).
