In recognition of his 50 years of excellence in practicing law, and for dedi-cated service to the community, Lester Ponder, JD ’38, was awarded the Indiana Bar Foundation’s 50-year award.

The Council for Court Excellence honored Herbert J. Miller, BA ’48, JD ’49, with its annual Justice Potter Stewart Award. The award recognizes individuals who have significantly contributed to the legal system or local and federal government administration.

Jacob A Stein, LLB ’48, litigation partner of the Washington law firm of Stein, Mitchell & Mezines, has received the 2002 American Inns of Court Professionalism Award for the D.C. Circuit.

At a recent cere-mony held for Denison University alumni, Frances H. Goodwin, JD ’56, (at left) was honored for her distinguished career as a lawyer and judge in Texas. She resides in Albuquerque, N.M., with her husband.

Robert O. Hetlage, LLM ’57, (at right) of the St. Louis law firm of Blackwell Sanders Peper Martin recently began a two-year term as vice president of the American Bar Foundation. He has served on the organization’s board of directors since 1996 and was elected vice president in May.

John Grinnell, BA ’50, MA ’51, JD ’61, organizing member of the Northern Virginia Athletic Directors, Administrators and Coaches Association, was awarded life membership at the organization’s 25th anniversary celebration.

Jonathan E. Johnson, JD '63, is the founder of the Los Angeles firm now known as Johnson, Poulson, Coons & Slater. He has practiced family law, estate planning, and probate law for more than 30 years. In 2000, Johnson was recognized by his peers as the 2000 Outstanding Lawyer of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society, Los Angeles Chapter.

After 30 years of service on the bench in New Mexico, Joseph F. Baca, JD ’64, LLD ’97, retired in July 2002.

Richard L. Schmalz, JD ’64, was named associate general counsel, chief intellectual property counsel and special environmental counsel at MeadWestvaco Corp. in Connecticut.

Martin Mendelsohn, JD ’66, has joined the law firm of Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis in Washington, D.C., as counsel.

M. Randolph Prince, JD ’66, was appointed as a member of the board of directors at Nyer Medical Group Inc. in Florida.

Symyx Technologies Inc. has named Irving S. Rappaport, JD ’66, as vice president of its intellectual property licensing business in California.

A new partner at the law firm of Venable, Baetjer, Howard & Civiletti in Washington, D.C., is James H. Pitts, JD ’67.

James P. Schaller, JD ’67, was elected a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Fellowship is by invitation and is limited to 500 trial lawyers from the United States and lawyers from 33 other countries. Schaller is a senior partner of D.C.’s Jackson & Campbell and is an adjunct professor at the Law School.

The St. Paul Companies in Minnesota has elected Lawrence G. Graev, JD ’69, to its board of directors.

In recognition of his outstanding character and lasting commitment to the community, Jerome N. Kline, LLM ’69, was awarded the Multiple Sclerosis Leadership Award by the national MS Society. Kline is a partner in the Philadelphia firm of Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel.

Peter J. Steenland Jr., BA ’67, JD ’70, joined the D.C. office of Sidley Austin Brown & Wood. He is counsel in its environmental and regulatory practices.

Planned Parenthood of Maryland has announced that its new board chair is Daniel M. Clements, JD ’71. Clements was elected to his new position at the June meeting of the organization’s board.

Stuart Lewin, JD ’71, a Peace Corps veteran who is now an attorney in private practice in Great Falls, Mont., is a candidate for the Montana House of Delegates.

The law firm of Piper Rudnick has announced that Henry M. Polmer, JD ’71, has joined the firm as a partner in its electronic commerce and privacy practice group in Washington, D.C.

Kenneth W. Curtis, JD ’72, joined Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner as a partner in its Washington, D.C. office.

Neil T. Proto, MA ’69, JD ’72, has joined Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis firm in Washington, D.C., as counsel.

The California Western School of Law in San Diego appointed Mark I. Weinstein, JD ’72, as its associate dean for administration.

Michael E. Wetherell, JD ’72, was recently elected to a four-year term of office as district judge of the Fourth Judicial District of the State of Idaho. Wetherell currently practices law with the firm of Hyde, Wetherell & Haff and serves on the Boise City Council. His service on the bench begins in January 2003.

Christensen O’Connor Johnson Kindness has named Paul C. Cullom Jr., JD ’73, as counsel in its patent practice group in Seattle.

Massachusetts Gov. Jane M. Swift has nominated Ronald B. Ingemie, JD ’73, to be clerk-magistrate in the Fitchburg District Court. Ingemie is noted for long service to the city, having served on the Fitchburg City Council from 1983 to 1997 and having twice served as acting mayor.

Stuart Rick, JD ’73, was nominated by President Bush to serve on the Merit Systems Protection Board. Rick is the deputy general counsel of the Office of Government Ethics.

A new partner in the firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy is Winthrop N. Brown, JD ’74, who joins the firm’s banking and institutional investment group in Washington, D.C.

Carol E. Bruce, BA ’71, JD ’74, was named a fellow at the American College of Trial Lawyers.

The New Jersey healthcare community recently recognized the work of Frank R. Ciesla Jr., LLM 74, by presenting him with the International Brotherhood Award.

Marc A. Feller, JD ’74, was appointed to the board of the Golden Slipper Club and Charities in Philadelphia, a volunteer group that supports the area’s youth, elderly and low-income families.

The law firm of O’Connor & Hannan has announced that Gerald H. Yamada, JD ’74, has joined the firm as a partner.

The law firm of Hogan & Hartson has welcomed Linda R. Horton, JD 75, as a partner in its food, drug, medical device, and agriculture group in Washington, D.C.

Philip L. Kossy, JD ’76, has joined the law firm of Luce, Forward, Hamilton and Scripps as a partner in San Diego. Kossy practices labor and employment law.

Margaret C. Henry, JD ’77, LLM ’81, has joined the New York law firm of Winston & Strawn.

Read-Rite Corp. this summer announced the promotion of Andrew C. Holcomb, JD ’77, to senior vice president and chief financial officer. Holcomb joined the company in 1998 as associate general counsel. Corporate headquarters are in Fremont, Calif.

Martha “Marty” Rogers, JD ’77, managing shareholder of the Washington office of the law firm Ober/Kaler, was recently elected to the D.C. Bar Board of Governors for a three-year term. The 23-member board is the governing body of the D.C. Bar Association.

Elaine Weiss, JD ’77, was named president and CEO of the Illinois CPA Society. She will also serve as president and CEO of the Illinois CPA Foundation and CPAs for the Public Interest.

In recognition of her involvement in public service agencies, the New York City Council honored Valerie Brathwaite-Nelson, JD ’78, with its Pacesetter Award.

John S. Doyle Jr. JD ’78, was named special counsel of government relations at the D.C. office of Adams and Reese.

The law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher announced in June that John S. Herbert, JD ’78, has been elected a partner. His practice for the firm will include the M&A and Private Equity Groups in New York.

The Energy and Mineral Law Foundation presented its 2002 President’s Award for Outstanding Legal Scholarship to Thomas C. Means, JD ’78, for his authorship of 10 law review quality articles published over the years in the annual proceedings of the foundation.

Bernard J. DiMuro, JD ’79, was elected president of the Virginia State Bar.

Sheryl L. Katz, JD ’79, was promoted to senior vice president, chief information officer and general counsel at 101communications in California.

Susan R. Meisinger, JD ’79, was named president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management in Virginia.

Charles W. Dorman, LLM ’80, was selected as assistant judge advocate general at the Office of the Navy Judge Advocate General in Washington, D.C.

Peter S. Glaser, JD ’80, joined Shook, Hardy & Bacon. He is a partner in the firm’s energy section in Washington, D.C.

Officials at U.S.Trust Co. of New York in August announced the appointment of Daina H. Hill, JD ’80, as a managing director. Hill will serve as general counsel and director of corporate oversight. Previously she was with Citibank for 15 years, most recently serving as a vice president and deputy general counsel for Citigroup Emerging Markets.

Claudia Z. Springer, JD ’80, joined the law firm of Reed Smith. She is a partner in its bankruptcy department in Philadelphia. She also was inducted recently into the American College of Bankruptcy.

The law firm of Kelley Drye & Warren has elected as partner Genevieve Morelli, JD ’81. Morelli is a telecommunications lawyer specializing in common carrier telecommunications.

Owens-Illinois Inc., a glass and plastics manufacturer, named Anastasia D. Kelly, JD ’81, as a member of its audit committee on the board of directors.

Susan L. Heller, JD ’82, joined Loeb & Loeb as its Los Angeles trademark group co-chair.

Richard A. Levan, JD ’82, has opened his own law firm, Richard A. Levan & Associates, in Philadelphia. The firm will provide legal and strategic consulting services for businesses in the financial services area.

Stroock & Stroock & Lavan in New York City has announced that Allan Neil Krinsman, JD ’82, a leading mortgage-backed securities professional, has joined the firm as partner. Most recently he was a partner with the law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.

The new head of Major Hagen Africa, an attorney placement office in Philadelphia, is Frank M. D’Amore, JD ’84.

Intellectual property specialist Scott J. Fields, JD ’84, recently presented a continuing legal education program sponsored by the Bisel CLE Institute in Philadelphia.

Valerie P. Morrison, BA ’81, JD ’84, recently joined the law firm of Wiley Rein & Fielding in its bankruptcy and financial restructuring practice in Virginia.

Paul I. Perez, JD ’84, was sworn in as the U.S. attorney for the middle district of Florida.

Gabor J. Rozsa, JD ’84, was named environmental counsel for the House Committee on Science and staff director of the Subcommittee on Energy.

Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe hired Steven C. Koppel, JD ’85, to be a shareholder in its real estate practice in New York.

Thomas W.A. Barham, JD ’86, has been named senior vice president of SCS Engineers in Virginia. Barham will continue as the firm’s general counsel in addition to overseeing the reorganization of the construction division.

Retired Army Lt. Gen. Daniel W. Christman, JD ’86, is a new director with Metal Storm Ltd., a ballistic technology company in Australia.

The Bank of New York has appointed Charles Burton Gordy II, JD ’86, as head of planned giving services. He joined the bank following tenure in a similar position at Yale University. The bank, founded in 1784 by Alexander Hamilton, is the nation’s oldest bank.

James M. Horowitz, JD ’86, was named executive vice president of business and legal affairs at Universal Pictures in California. Previously, Horowitz has overseen the business transactions of Miramax and Dreamworks films.

Eric Mirabel, LLM ’86, joined Winstead, Sechrest & Minick as its counsel in its intellectual property practice in Houston, Texas.

AmeriChoice Corp., a public sector health care program in Vienna, Va., recently appointed Eric Settle, JD ’86, (at left) as its senior vice president and general counsel.

The new director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is John Howard, LLM ’87. Since 1991 Howard was chief of Occupational Safety and Health for the state of California.

Lee H. Olesky, JD ’87, was named president of the TradeWeb Group and CEO and president of the TradeWeb Europe in London.

A newly elected senior partner in the law firm of Hale and Dorr is Scott M. Alter, JD ’88 (pictured at right). Alter is based in the Washington, D.C., office.

The Markle Foundation appointed Joanna K. McIntosh, JD ’88, as its director of Markle’s Policy for a Networked Society program in NewYork.

New counsel in the Washington, D.C., law firm of Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis is John B. Britton, JD ’89.

Candida P. Wolff, JD ’89, was named assistant to the vice president for legislative affairs at the White House.

The Chicago law firm of Winston & Strawn this summer renewed its commitment to pro bono efforts by engaging Gregory A. McConnell, JD ’90, as its director of public interest law. McConnell spent several years as director of the American Bar Association Center for Pro Bono prior to joining Winston & Strawn.

Robert G. Coberly, JD ’90, was recently named counsel at Powell, Goldstein Frazer & Murphy.

The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel has announced that James F. Mannion, JD ’90, has been elected a fellow of the college. A partner in the law firm of Mannion Prior in King of Prussia, Pa., Mannion concentrates his practice in the areas of fiduciary litigation, estate planning, and estate administration.

The Virginia Bar Association honored Mary C. Zinsner, JD ’90, at its 112th annual meeting, where she received the VBA Young Lawyers Division Fellows Award.

Richard S. Denning, JD ’91, is senior vice president and general counsel at Cumulus Media Inc. in Atlanta.

Christie B. Heinze, JD ’91, became a partner at the law firm of Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner in Atlanta.

Karen A. Lewis, JD ’91, relocated to Paris, France, with her husband and two sons for a three-year tour as assistant general counsel for PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting.

The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens has tapped Evan Chuck, JD ’93, as its special counsel in connection with the development and construction of a classical Chinese garden in San Marino, Calif. Chuck is with the Los Angeles law firm of White & Case.

Mark C. Kalpin, JD ’93, (pictured at right) has been elected to senior partnership at the law firm of Hale and Dorr. Kalpin, who is based in Boston, advises energy industry clients as well as counsels industrial and real estate development clients on all aspects of environmental law.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Chad T. Sarchio, JD ’95, was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the DC Bar’s Judicial Evaluation Committee. He is also an adjunct professor in the trail advocacy program at the Law School.

Joseph H. Webster, JD ’95, is a partner at Hobbs, Straus, Dean & Walker, a firm specializing in federal Indian law. He and his wife, Belinda, also celebrated the birth of a daughter, Ann Kathryn.

Alejandro Brito, JD ’96, joined the law firm of Zarco & Pardo as a partner in its commercial litigation practice in Miami.

Sharri H. Horowitz, JD ’96, (pictured at left) joined the regional defense litigation law firm of Marshall, Dennehey, Warner, Coleman & Goggin in Cherry Hill, N.J. She will concentrate on defending professional liability and employment law matters.

The law firm of Covington & Burling in Washington has announced that David M. Marchick, JD ’96, has joined the firm as special counsel in its international trade and transportation practices.

Max Riederer von Paar, LLM ’96, was a guest speaker at the recent conference of the National Network of Estate Planning Attorneys in Reno, Nev., where he spoke about international estate planning.

A new associate in the law firm of Sterne Kessler Goldstein & Fox in Washington is Kimberly N. Reddick, JD ’96.

Alicia J. Triche, JD ’96, is working on a legal research degree at Oxford as a Fulbright Scholar. She also has been selected as an associate editor of the Oxford Commonwealth Law Journal.

Wachovia Securities Inc. has a new vice president in its newly formed equity private placements group in Charlotte, N.C.—Tim Wielechowski, JD ’96.

The ePrivacy Group in Paoli, Pa., appointed Ray Everett-Church, JD ’97, as its chief privacy officer.

Anson Kaye, JD ’97, is now press secretary to Rep. Anthony Weiner (D.-N.Y.). He returns to Washington from the position of press secretary for the Middlesex district attorney’s office in Boston.

Michael Seth Levine, JD ’97, was married to Melissa Beth Labelson June 2. Levine is an attorney with Esbin and Alter in New York City.

The law firm of Blank Rome Comisky & McCauley has announced the arrival of a new associate in its litigation and dispute resolution practice in Philadelphia. She is Kathy E. Ochroch, JD ’97. Ochroch also is the firm’s pro bono coordinator.

Ronald Christie, JD ’98, was selected to serve as special assistant to the president and director of policy initiatives and governmental affairs for the USA Freedom Corps.

A former assistant attorney general for the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Stan Davis, JD ’98, recently joined the Wickwire Gavin law firm in Madison, Wis.

Yoshinari Kishimoto, LLM ’98, became an associate at the law firm of Sughrue Mion.

James R. Simoes, JD ’98, was married May 11 to Brenda A. Lynch. Simoes is an attorney with the law firm of Hunton & Williams in Washington, D.C.

Two recent law alumni were married in May near Atlantic City. They are Douglas E. Simon, JD ’98, and Jessica L. Pollock, JD ’99. Simon is a commercial tenant real estate broker at Tactix Inc., and Pollock is an attorney with Fox, Rothschild, O’Brien & Frankel. Many friends from GW Law attended the wedding. The couple now resides in Philadelphia.

Richard A. Sterba, JD ’98, became a shareholder at the law firm of Lee & Sterba in Arlington, Va.

In recognition of his service to support military legal assistance, Jerry A. Stevenson, JD ’98, received the 2001 Lamp Distinguished Service Award.

Music law is the specialty that Gillian Malken, JD ’99, will be practicing with the New York entertainment law firm of Codikow, Carroll, Guido & Groffman.

Mark Reynolds, BA ’96, JD ’99, and his wife, Jacci, announced the birth of their son Justin Michael on Nov. 30, 2001.

During her time at the Law School, Kerry Ruttenberg, JD ’99, spent two years participating in the domestic violence clinic at GW. Now a third-year associate in the Washington law firm of King & Spalding, Ruttenberg approached her bosses about founding a domestic violence program at the firm. She got the approval, and just months since its inception, four partners and some 20 associates have signed on to the pro bono effort.

Loren J. Sciurba, JD ’99, and Karen E. Gray, JD ’99, were married in October 2000 and have remained in the Washington area. Sciurba is counsel for the office of the inspector general of the postal service, and Gray joined the Reston, Va., office of Piper Rudnick.

The law firm of Sterne Kessler Goldstein & Fox has announced that Bruce E. Chalker, JD ’00, is newly associated with the firm.

Susann M. King, JD ’00, has joined the law firm of O’Malley Miles Nylen & Gilmore as an associate in Maryland.

The University of the Witwatersrand School of Law in Johannesburg, South Africa, appointed Vincent O. Orlu Nmehielle, SJD ’00, as the Bram Fischer Chair of Human Rights Law. His book, The African Human Rights System: Its Laws, Practice, and Institutions, was published in December 2001.

Catherine L. Strauss, JD ’00, was married to John Lowe IV on April 21, 2002. Strauss, who is keeping her name, is an associate at Schottenstein, Zox & Dunn in Columbus, Ohio, practicing commercial litigation.

Roger L. Swartzwelder, MBA ’93, JD ’00, joined the law firm of Dow, Lohnes & Albertson in its higher education group in Washington, D.C.

A new addition to the law firm of Wiley Rein & Fielding is Dylan G. Trache, JD ’00. Trache works in the firm’s bankruptcy and financial restructuring practice in Virginia.

A candidate for Maryland state senate (District 15) in Montgomery County, Md., is Rob Garagiola, JD ’01. Besides being a candidate for office, he is associated with the law firm Greenberg Traurig.

Emile Loza, JD ’01, has joined the Idaho Court of Appeals as clerk to the Honorable Sergio Gutierrez, the first Hispanic appointed to the Idaho judiciary.

Alice M. Shanahan, MPH ’01, JD ’01, joined the law firm of Greenbaum, Rowe, Smith, Ravin, Davis and Himmel as an associate in Woodbridge, N.J.
