He is one of the co-directors of the Mid-Atlantic Center for Children's Health and the Environment. He is the Chair of General and Community Pediatrics at Children's National Medical Center and is Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Environmental Health and also co- chair of the Special Interest Group on Pediatric Environmental Health of the Ambulatory Pediatrics Association. He is a member of the Education Committee of the Children's Environmental Health Network Advisory Group.

Dr. Gitterman was recently appointed to the Children's Environmental Health and Protection Advisory Council of the State of Maryland. He speaks regularly in local, regional and national forums regarding pediatric environmental health issues, particularly with regard to advocacy and health care provider education and has been involved in the planning and implementation of numerous Train-the-Trainer seminars and workshops. He is also the director of a HRSA funded postgraduate training program for pediatricians in General Academic Pediatrics and Community Oriented Primary Care.

 

In his clinical role, he is responsible for the planning and delivery of pediatric services in 7 sites in Washington DC, responsible for 65,000 pediatric and adolescent patient visits annually. He remains an active, practicing pediatrician; both as a clinical preceptor and as a direct care provider, working primarily with undeserved children and their families.
