Dr. Dixon received a BS in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and an MD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his Residency at Duke University and served as a faculty member there before returning to the University of Pittsburgh in 1975. Currently, Dr. Dixon is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, a position he has held since 1979. He is a winner of the Golden Apple Award from both Duke and Pitt, and recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh.
Since 1992, in addition to his teaching duties, Dr. Dixon has been the Director of the Allegheny County Health Department and oversees all Health Department programs, which impact air quality, environmental quality, and human health. During his tenure, the Allegheny County Health Department has received numerous awards for innovative approaches to Public Health, including the Beard Award from NACCHO for "Literary Gems for the Rest room"; The Samuel J. Crumbine Award from the Foodservice and Packaging Institute, Inc. for innovation in Food Safety regulation; and a Linkages Award from the Council on Linkages between Academia and Public Health Practices for the collaborative between ACHD and the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
The Health Department has formed innovative non profit partnerships to facilitate public health delivery, including Healthy Start, Inc. to address issues of minority infant death; Allegheny Correctional Health Services, Inc. to administer health care to County jail inmates; Tobacco Free Allegheny to administer tobacco settlement money in Allegheny County; and Three Rivers Wet Weather Program, Inc. to address sewage overflows in the County. Dr. Dixon chairs the boards of two of these corporations and is represented on all four.
He has published numerous articles on topics including bioterrorism and preparedness, HIV, evaluation of teaching and learning, and the effect of poverty on access and outcome of health care delivery. |
