This conference is organized annually by the Mid-Atlantic center for Children's Health and the Environment. The 2005 3rd Annual Conference is jointly sponsored by The Mid-Atlantic Center for Children's Health and the Environment, The Maryland Department of Health and Hygiene, The United States Environmental Protection Agency, Region III and The Centers for Disease control.

•  Course Overview

The third annual Mid-Atlantic Conference on Children's Health and the Environment will address clinically important issues in children's health as they are affected by the environment. Children of all ages, including those in the fetal stages of development, can be affected by environmental hazards such as lead, air pollution in schools and homes, pesticides and asbestos. Exposure to these substances via air, water, food or soil can have a significant impact on the health of children.

Welcome and orientation will be conducted by Benjamin A. Gitterman, MD, Maureen Edwards, MD, MPH and Prentiss Ward MS, ME. Howard Frumkin MD, MPH, PhD, will present the Key note address on the built Environment and obesity in Children. The morning and afternoon sessions will include simultaneous workshop sessions on a variety of topics for attendees to choose from including Healthy Schools , Outcomes in Newborns, Asthma and Exposure Outcomes. The conference will be closed by Lynn Goldman MD, MPH.

•  Target Audience (top)

This course is designed for various health professionals including pediatricians, family medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, school nurses, public health professionals and other allied health professionals.

•  Goal

The goal of this educational activity is to educate and promote awareness among health care professionals on environmental health issues that affect children.

•  Accreditation /Continuing Education

  • This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the United States Environmental Protection Agency Region III and The Mid-Atlantic Center for Children’s Health and the Environment. CDC is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CDC designates this educational activity for a maximum of 8.0 hours in category 1 credit towards the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity..
  • This activity for 9.4 contact hours is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is accredited as a provider of continuing education in nursing by American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation
  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been designated as a provider of continuing education contact hours in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. This conference is a designated event and has been approved for 8.0 Category 1 Continuing Education Contact Hours (CECH) for Certified Health Education Specialists.
  • The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has been reviewed and approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). The CDC has awarded .8 hours of CEU’s to participants who successfully complete this program

•  Registration

The registration fee is $25 for students with valid ID, $75 for Non-physician health professionals and $125 for physicians, lawyers and others. All registrations should be received ON or BEFORE September 20, 2005 . The fee includes continental breakfast, coffee breaks, lunch and conference syllabus.
