Kendo, the Way of the Sword

In Japanese, the word "Kendo" literally translated means "way of the sword" ("Ken" = sword, and "Do" = the way) and is the traditional art of Japanese fencing developed by the Samurai. Kendo's origins stem from many of the sword fighting techniques developed over hundreds of years of war and from the many sword schools of early Japan. The goal of Kendo is not only to develop the physical skills necessary for sword fighting, but to also introduce students to moral and spiritual aspects that can carry over into one's daily life. Etiquette, or "rei-gi" is also a critical competent of Kendo training. In Japan, Kendo is one of the most popular martial arts, and is practiced in schools, universities, workplaces, police stations, as well as traditional Kendo dojos. Kendo's popularity has also spread the world over and has a strong following in both North America and Europe
