Library Resources for Students

The Gelman Library holdings in support of Judaic Studies are the most comprehensive in the Washington Research Libraries Consortium. Highlights include:

• The Special Collections Department's housing of papers of the Jewish Community Council of Greater Washington and the Jewish Funeral Practices Committee of Greater Washington, as well as the Halperin collection of maps of the Holy Land.
• The Jewish Heritage Video Collection (184 videos) to support teaching about Jewish life, a gift of the Charles H. Revson Foundation.
• Electronic resources including the Judaic Classics Library, a CD-ROM containing the full text of the classic works of Judaism, and the Encyclopedia Judaica, a multimedia CD-ROM.

The I. Edward Kiev Collection is one of the largest collections of its kind in the District of Columbia and on the East Coast. A gift of the Kiev Library Trust, established by the family of Ari and Phyllis Kiev, the collection comprises more than 10,000 volumes on religion, philosophy, classics and art. While most of the gift dates from the 19th and 20th centuries, the collection features a variety of incunabular pieces. This gift is considered to be a living library, as it will continue to grow and may eventually expand to include artifacts and manuscripts. The collection is housed at the Melvin Gelman Library, and is currently available for use.
