The Board of Jewish Education of Greater Washington and the George Washington University have developed a cooperative agreement to provide a graduate degree program in education with a concentration in Judaic Studies. The program, established in 1989, is administered by the University's Graduate School of Education and Human Development and includes a minimum of 15 credit hours of Judaic Studies in the curriculum. Some of these courses are taught by faculty in the GWU Program in Judaic Studies.
The Cooperative Graduate Program in Education/Judaic Studies is designed as a part time evening program in which a student can earn a Master of Arts in Education or an Education Specialist degree in a period of 24 to 36 months. Substantial tuition assistance is available for students who are employed in day or supplementary school programs in the metropolitan area through a grant from the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Greater Washington.
The primary purpose of the program is to provide the opportunity for current and future Jewish educators to integrate education pedagogy and advanced Judaic study with their existing Judaic content knowledge. (Prerequisite course work is available for students with limited backgrounds in Judaic Studies). Elective education course work allows the graduate student to focus in the areas of teaching, administration, or family education.
