Play, Intervention, and the Young Child:
Promoting Healthy Development in Early Childhood Settings through Play-Based Interventions
Featured speaker: Dr. Eliana Gil is a well-known lecturer, author, and clinician. She is Director of Clinical Services for Childhelp, Inc. and works at the Childhelp Children’s Center in Fairfax, Virginia. Dr. Gil provides three-day training intensives through Starbright Training Institute for Child and Family Play Therapy in Northern Virginia. Dr. Gil is a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor, Registered Art Therapist, and a licensed Marriage, Family, Child Counselor. She has written numerous materials on child abuse and related topics and has a number of educational videotapes that feature her work available through Guilford Press, as well as a self-published videotape on Family Play Therapy. Her most recent book is Helping Abused and Traumatized Children: Integrating Directive and Nondirective Approaches. Other books related to play therapy include Cultural Issues in Play Therapy (with Dr. Athena Drewes); The Healing Power of Play; and Play in Family Therapy.

SPED 220: Special Topics in Guiding and Supporting Families: Culturally Diverse and Multi-Stressed Families
The five-day institute is a 3-credit course that was held on George
Washington’s Foggy Bottom campus. It drew upon the expertise of regional
experts as guest lecturers to introduce and explore major course themes and
concepts. The course was open to GW students as well as practitioners and
administrators in the DC metropolitan area. 1-credit enrollment was arranged
for practicing professionals.
