There are many small to mid-sized and some multinational companies in the vicinity that look to recruit students for internships as well as full time job opportunities. There are typically two career fairs held at the university campus every year, at which students get to interact with the company representatives that might lead to an onsite interviews. Students can also search for and apply for internships and jobs through the year by accessing the university career website http://gwired.gwu.edu/career/

The job scenario differs from school to school at GW and we are trying to put together the opinions from students from different schools. If you don't find your school listed here, you could take the initiative to be the first one to volunteer the information for your school.

1. School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS)

There are a lot of technical as well as non technical companies located in the DC-Maryland-VA area constantly looking to hire fresh graduates and interns. Many of these companies have openings for software professionals. The number of companies recruiting Electrical Engineers is comparatively less. Most of the firms working in the field of VLSI and hardware have government contracts and generally require their employees to have a Security Clearance, which affects the placement opportunities for international students.

Internship Opportunities

Most of the companies are coming to the GW career fair looking to fill up their full time positions. So sometimes it gets difficult for students be picked up for internships. However the best way to apply for internships is through the GW career website http://gwired.gwu.edu/career/ which is constantly updated and students can directly apply for specific positions of their choice. This site is very helpful especially for students looking for internship opportunities as many of the local companies advertise their internship vacancies on this site. Most of the positions here though are for students specializing in Computer Science or are ready to work in the software or networking fields.

Full Time Opportunities

The major recruiters that come to GW during the career fair are companies like Hughes Network Systems (HNS), Sprint, Opnet , Cap Gemeni since they are located around DC.

For ECE graduates specializing in VLSI, apart from HNS there is limited scope for finding a job through the career fair since most of the hardware companies in this area work on defense and government projects that require employees to have a security clearance. Sprint is the major recruiter for students specializing in networks and telecommunication.
