Announcing The Walter Roberts Award for Public Diplomacy Studies

The Global Communication M.A. Program, the Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication, and the Walter Roberts Endowment are now accepting applications for the 2012 Walter Roberts Award. This commendation is to be given to a graduating graduate student working and studying in the area of public diplomacy. Although there are no specific requirements such as minimum GPA, strong consideration will go toward students who have performed at a high level in class, who have taken and done well in one or more of the public diplomacy classes taught at GW, who have chosen public diplomacy as their area of concentration, have worked in public diplomacy-related fields prior to and/or during their time at GW, and/or have an interest in pursuing a career in public diplomacy.

A committee comprised of the IPDGC/Global Communication Director, the Walter Roberts Endowment Chair, and one other member of the WRE Board (to be named by the chair) will review applications and determine the recipient of an award of $1,000. The committee may also choose to offer a second place award ($500) if they determine the applicant pool so warrants. (They also may choose to not offer any award if they do not feel there is a worthy candidate.)

Students interested in applying for the Walter Roberts Award should do the following: Fill out the application (here) which will ask for, among other basic biographical information, the following:

• Degree Program
• Area of Concentration
• GPA (overall and within concentration)
• Public Diplomacy Courses taken and grades received
• Other PD-related courses and grades received
• PD-related work experience
• Short essay (750 words max) describing the applicant's interest and experience in public diplomacy, and career goals.

IPDGC partners with USIP to produce event on Syria

Groundtruth: New Media, Technology, and the Syrian Crisis took place Tuesday, October 3rd, at the United States Institute of Peace. Three panels addressed the ongoing conflict from the perspective of the activists and the regime, the reporters following the crisis, and the decision makers who interpret this information to craft U.S. Policy.

IPDGC welcomes visiting scholar Dr. Abdul Hakim Asher

Dr. Asher is the Director of the Government Media and Information Centre for the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. During his time at GW he will work on an upcoming book, participate in school events, and connect with scholars and students through informal brown bag lunches. Dr. Asher will stay at the George Washington University until May 2013.

Former IPDGC fellow appointed as Ambassador to Equitorial Guinea

On June 29, the Senate confirmed former IPDGC Public Diplomacy fellow Mark Asquino as the newest Ambassador to Equitorial Guinea.
