Int Med 350
There are specific and legitimate reasons for some students to study
abroad. Students with a strong interest in differing health
administration systems have spent time in countries with different health
care systems. Others have gone abroad because of an interest in tropical
medicine. Others, usually strong and very independent students, have done
a primary care experience in a third world country. Others still have
chosen to do an elective in the UK having heard that British physicians
tend to be better physical diagnosticians, and rely less on tests and
technology than their American Colleagues.
Students who have had academic problems should not plan on going
abroad. Furthermore, we will not be able to approve clinical electives
for any student in a country in whose language you are not fluent. It is
hard to take a cardiac history from a German-speaking patient if you speak
only English! Finally, we will not approve an elective simply to give a
student a chance to travel. Please note the following persons on our
faculty who can help you arrange an opportunity abroad:
- Dr. Jorge Rios, Department of Medicine, Latin America, see 506
description in the Senior Directory
- Dr. Skip Williams, Department of Anesthesiology. Africa
- Dr. Glenn Geelhoed, IDIS 350
- Dr. Dick Riegelman, Department of Health Care Sciences. Public Health
opportunities in a number of countries
