Prof. Mohammad Ayatollahi Tabaar examines divergent Iranian views on the Koran's divine origins in The New York Times.

IMES Faculty Associate Amb. Edward Gnehm was one of three co-authors of a report on "lessons learned and best practices regarding the integration of civilian and military intervention across the full spectrum of activities from the time before military intervention takes place through to post-conflict nation-building" for the RAND Corporation.


IMES Faculty Associate Yaron Peleg's new book, "Israeli Culture Between the Two Intifadas," examines Israel's ambivalent relationship with Jewish nationalism at the end of the twentieth century through inspired readings of Hebrew literature and popular media.

IMES was pleased to host Cangül Örnek as a 2008-2009 IMES visiting scholar. Örnek is a Ph.D. candidate at Marmara University, Istanbul and is currently conducting research for her dissertation, "The Impact of Anglo-Saxon Thought on Turkish Intellectuals in the 1950s."


IMES Faculty Associate Marc Lynch, Brookings scholars Kristin Lord and Hady Amr, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Michael Doran all weighed in on "Public Diplomacy and the War of Ideas: Agendas for the Next Administration, " a panel discussion broadcast live on C-SPAN.

IMES Faculty Associate Marc Lynch co-authored "Iraq's Political Transition after the Surge: Five Enduring Tensions and Ten Key Challenges" P D F icon for the Center for American Progress (September 2008). Lynch and his co-authors discuss the political transition currently facing the Iraqi national government, now that the last of the U.S. troop surge brigades have left Iraq.


IMES Faculty Associate Ilana Feldman's new book, "Governing Gaza: Bureaucracy, Authority, and the Work of Rule, 1917-1967," draws upon research conducted in Gaza, Cairo, Jerusalem, and London and two years of interviews with retired civil servants in Gaza.

IMES Faculty Associate Mona Atia won the 2008 Distinguished Dissertation Award from the University of Washington for her dissertation titled "Building a House in Heaven: Islamic Charity in Neoliberal Egypt"

IMES Faculty Associate Christopher Kojm authored "Why Did Prime Minister Maliki Call for a Timeline?" for the Center for American Progress.

IMES Faculty Associate Ilana Feldman was also awarded the Horizons Prize from the Society for Cultural Anthropology for her article, "Difficult Distinctions: Refugee Law, Humanitarian Practice, and Political Identification in Gaza." The jury called the work a "deeply researched and thought-provoking analysis."

IMES Director Nathan Brown published a commentary P D F iconfor the Carnegie Endowment on Kuwait's parliamentary elections. Brown contends that the current standoff between parliament and Kuwait's ruling family, "may have some serious implications for democracy in the Gulf."
