The Elliott School of International Affairs
The Institure for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies

Students | FUNDING

There are several ways that the Institute helps support student and faculty study and research.

The Maria H. Davis European Studies endowment supports graduate students studying Europe at GW or studying or doing an internship in Europe. For students going to Europe, funds can help defray travel costs to get to a study program or an internship. Davis funds also help help support research assistants and faculty research at IERES.

The Helen and Sergius Yakobson Scholarship endowment helps support M.A. students whose major or minor field is Russian or East/Central European studies. Students are selected on the basis on financial need and exceptional academic achievement or potential. Candidates are recommended to the Office of Student Financial Assistance by a committee of faculty appointed by the Dean of the Elliott School.

The award honors Prof. Helen B. Yakobson, who joined GW’s faculty in 1951 as a lecturer of the Russian language. From 1952 to 1969, she served as Chariman of the Department of Slavic Language and Literature. She began the Chinese Program in 1963. She was awarded the rank of the full professor in 1964 and was recognized as the Outstanding Professor at GWU in 1966. Prof. Yakobson retired from the University in 1983.

A.Michael Hoffman funding is available for doctoral students, research assistants, and professors conducting research on Europe/Eurasia. For Ph.D. students in the final research and writing stages of their dissertation, t wo awards of $7500 each will be given for students meeting at least one of the following criteria:

  • The student is working in any area of European and/or Eurasian studies and is nearing completion of the dissertation. This award is designed to enable the student to focus on finishing the Ph.D.
  • The student needs to undertake a research trip to Europe and/or Eurasia to complete the final stage of dissertation research and begin writing. This award is designed to enable the student to engage in crucial primary research, but is only for advanced students, not for an initial trip.
  • The student is working on any subject relating to the Cold War and seeks to participate in GWU’s Cold War exchange with the London School of Economics. This award is designed to help defray the costs of traveling to/living in London.

The Institute distributes a call for applications during the spring semester. Applicants should send a one-page abstract of the dissertation, a c.v., a budget, a time-lin eof research, writing and completion, and a letter of support from the dissertation chair. Students seeking the award under the first category must provide an estimated date of completion for the dissertation. Students applying under the second category must state their expected date of travel to LSE. Awardees will be asked to give a presentation on some part of their dissertation at the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies and are offered the option of having office space at the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies.

Michael Hoffman established generous funding for the research and study of Europe and Eurasia in memory of his father, George Hoffman, who had been a long-time professor of the geography of southern and central Europe. George Hoffman spent most of his career as a professor of geography at the University of Texas at Austin. He then was the first director of East European Studies at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. and also a Research Associate of our Institute. The George Washington University Archive holds Professor Hoffman's papers, which include documents on his involvement with Marshall Plan of reconstruction for post-World War II Europe and many pictures of Europe before and after World War II. A. Michael Hoffman is the Chairman of Palamon Capital Partners in London and a member of the International Council of the Elliott School.

For other funding opportunities, students should visit the George Washington University’s Office of Graduate Student Fellowships and Assistantships.
