Refreshments will be available at 4:00 PM and the program will commence promptly at 4:30 PM.

Presentation Description:

Major emergencies and disasters invariably create a wide range of emotional response in both victims and responders. Effective emergency management involves shaping desirable behavior in both populations, so understanding and influencing emotions, or using emotion to promote preferred actions, may become important for successful outcomes.

Some people and organizations solve a variety of emotion-related problems accurately and quickly. “Emotionally intelligent” people, for example, can accurately perceive emotions in faces. Such individuals also know how to use emotional episodes to promote specific types of thinking. Anticipating and perceiving emotions accurately, and understanding the role they play in reasoning, communications, judgment and decision-making can have a powerful impact on both victims and responders.

This forum will examine theories and research related to emotions and emotional information during stressful situations. The presenter will discuss the relevance of emotional intelligence to emergency management, using specific examples of effective practice in the field.
