Annual Leave
All regular full-time and regular part-time employees accrue
annual leave based on years of employment. Annual leave is used
for such purposes as vacation, emergencies, and religious observances.
Supervisors must approve annual leave before it begins, if it
is scheduled,
or be notified through established departmental procedures if
it is unscheduled.
All annual leave is available on the first day of each fiscal
year (July 1), is taken in one-hour increments and may be borrowed
in advance of accrual. Annual leave must be used by the end of
the fiscal year (June 30); it does not carry over into the next
fiscal year. The exception to this use-it-or-lose-it policy is
that Vice Presidents may approve a modest carryover
of annual leave into the next fiscal year.
Employees who borrow unaccrued leave and conclude their employment
from the University before accruing the leave will have an amount
equal to the unaccrued leave deducted from their final paychecks.
Supervisors should refer to the information in this section to answer questions regarding the
administration of annual leave. Any questions regarding abuse of annual leave should be
directed to the Employee Relations Division at (202) 994-9611. All other questions should be
directed to the Employee Benefits Administration Division at (202) 994-9620.
