History with Special Honors

Students interested in earning the notation of "Special Honors in History" on their transcript must meet three requirements:

1. Fulfill the general honors requirements listed under University Regulations.

2. Graduate with a GPA of 3.3 overall and 3.5 in the major.

3. Earn at least an A- in both HIST 199W (Thesis Seminar) and HIST 191 (Senior Honors Thesis), where you further develop your thesis under faculty supervision. Alternately, you may find a full-time faculty member who is willing to work with you independently on an honors thesis topic. Do not expect faculty members to agree to do so unless you have taken at least one class with them before and done very well. If you find a willing faculty member, he or she signs you into HIST 191, which then takes the place of HIST 199W in the major requirements. This tutorial can be for one semester or a whole year, as agreed upon between you and your thesis director. To graduate with Honors you must earn at least an A- on the paper.

In order to enroll in HIST 191, students must complete a Registration Transaction Form and obtain the signature of their thesis director.
