History deals with connections between past and present. It helps us better understand where we've been and better predict where we are headed. The history major requires students to acquaint themselves with history in a variety of areas yet is also flexible enough to allow them to focus on an area of individual interest.

To declare a History major you need to get a Declaration pf Major/Minor form from the Columbian college office (107 Phillips Hall), fill it out, and bring it to one of the History Department undergraduate advisors.

Important notice:

Beginning in the fall of 2006 the History Department has changed the requirements for majoring in history. We have dropped the requirement, listed in the 2006-2007 Bulletin that students must take History 198, the Undergraduate Reading Seminar. Both History 198 and 199 -- the Senior Thesis -- have become increasingly crowded and hard to get into in the last few years. By eliminating 198 as a requirement, we will be able to offer enough sections of 199 so that this will no longer be a problem. With 198 eliminated, we will now require eight other (not seven as before) 100-level courses in Groups A, B and C as described on p. 170 of the 2006-2007 Bulletin. Under the new rules at least two courses must be taken in all three groups; the other two courses can be in any group. All declared majors can complete the major under either the old or the new requirements. New majors should take the new requirements.
