Undergraduate Admissions

Undergraduate students who are considering a History concentration should read first about the requirements and instructions for declaring a Major or Minor. Then come speak to an advisor (any full-time faculty member in the department) during his or her office hours to discuss your course of study.

Application Procedures

The Department of History expects all applicants to its graduate program to submit their applications online through the Graduate Admissions Office of the Columbian College. This does not include academic transcripts and GRE scores, which candidates must mail directly to the Columbian College prior to the application deadline. Applicants should also fill out and submit a Prospective Advisor Form. Applications will not be considered complete until all materials have been received.

Application Deadlines

Fall admission to the Ph.D. program: January 15.
Fall admission to the M.A. program: April 1.
Spring admission to either program: October 1.

International applicants are required to submit additional materials before their applications may be considered. For more information, please consult the Graduate Admissions Office.

GRE code: Applicants should use 5246, the code for GW's Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. The History Department does not have a separate code.
