Important Reminder: Tips on How to SHELTER-IN-PLACE
BE AWARE that notification can come from UPD, GW Housing Staff, other University faculty and staff, radio and television, local authorities, a public address system, and through GW Alert, Alert DC, and/or the GW Info Line.
PREPARE by keeping a few items in the place you spend most of your time (office, residence hall, apartment, etc.). To make Sheltering-in-Place more comfortable, always keep on hand:
Extra prescription medicine Non-perishable food Bottled water First-aid supplies Flashlight Battery-operated radio Extra batteries Telephone
IF YOU ARE INSIDE, STAY WHERE YOU ARE. If outside, go to the nearest campus building. Collect any necessary items and bring a phone with you.
Shelter-in-Place in an INTERIOR ROOM, ABOVE GROUND LEVEL, and with the FEWEST WINDOWS. If there is a large group of people inside a particular building, several rooms may be necessary.
SHUT & LOCK ALL WINDOWS AND CLOSE EXTERIOR DOORS to form a tight seal. Make a list of all the people with you. CALL UPD with your list so that they know where you are.
CHECK CAMPUS ADVISORIES online, or call the GW Information Line at 202-994-5050. Turn on a radio or television and LISTEN FOR FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS. Check your registered cell phone or mobile device for AlertDC text message updates. Make yourself comfortable.
Evacuate only if your building is damaged or you are directed to do so.
Look after each other. You will get word when it is safe to come out.
