About the Speakers
Mike Allen, The Politico
Mike Allen is the chief political correspondent for Politico. He comes to us from Time magazine where he was their White House correspondent. Prior to that, Allen spent six years at The Washington Post, where he covered President Bush's first term, Capitol Hill, campaign finance, and the Bush, Gore and Bradley campaigns of 2000. Before turning to national politics, he covered schools and local governments in rural counties outside Fredericksburg, Va., for The Free Lance-Star, then wrote about Doug Wilder, Oliver North, Chuck Robb and the Bobbitts for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, where he nurtured police sources on overnight ride-alongs through housing projects. Allen also covered Mayor Giuliani, the Connecticut statehouse and the wacky rich of Greenwich for The New York Times. Before moving to The Times, he did stints in the Richmond and Alexandria bureaus of The Washington Post. Allen grew up in Orange County, Calif., and has a B.A. from Washington and Lee University, where he majored in politics and journalism.

Charles Ellison, BlackPolicy.org
Mr. Ellison is a widely-known and reputable public policy analyst, media and government relations expert with over a decade of experience. He is a critically-acclaimed author, co-host of the weekly Blackpolicy.org LIVE on XM Channel 130 (POTUS '08) and a frequent analyst for XM Radio. He is considered a leading expert on the use of technology in modern politics; e-governance; African American political development; the intersection of media, pop-culture and politics; modern American political and public policy trends; the U.S. Congress; state, local and federal political campaign trends. His highly anticipated political thriller, TANTRUM, is scheduled for release in February 2008. Based in Washington, D.C., Mr. Ellison serves as a Senior Advisor to the Center for African American Policy at the University of Denver (CAAP-DU). He is also a CAAP Senior Fellow in Public Policy and Chief Editor of the center's popular flagship website Blackpolicy.org, providing key government relations support on major policy issues important to the Center. Frank Greer, GMMB
Frank Greer is a founding partner at GMMB. He has more than 30 years of experience in communications and advertising, serving clients that include major foundations, public interest groups, labor organizations, corporations, and successful candidates for Congress, governor, Senate and the presidency.
Frank and his firm produced media for and provided strategic advice to the campaigns of President Bill Clinton, Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon, Florida Governor Lawton Chiles, Kentucky Governor Brereton Jones, West Virginia Governors Gaston Caperton and Bob Wise, and Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut, as well as numerous other candidates and causes.
Frank has also provided counsel and communications services to clients such as the Kaiser Family Foundation, Carnegie Foundation, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and major efforts on education reform and environmental protection.
In 1993, Frank went to South Africa to assist then-presidential candidate Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress in their winning campaign. Mark McKinnon, Maverick Media Mark McKinnon is vice chairman of Public Strategies and president of Maverick Media. As chief media advisor to President George W. Bush, McKinnon directed the advertising effort for the 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns. He currently advises Senator John McCain.
McKinnon is an award-winning media producer and communications strategist who has served as principal media advisor for hundreds of corporate and political campaigns around the world. He has been awarded more than 30 Pollie and Telly awards, honoring the nation's best political and public affairs advertising.
According to Broadcasting and Cable magazine, McKinnon is one of "a handful of players behind every big decision, consensus or roadblock in Washington...putting a unique, sometimes hidden stamp on the outcome of today's debates."
President Bush appointed McKinnon to serve as a member of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the independent, autonomous entity responsible for all U.S. government and government-sponsored, non-military, international broadcasting. The nine-member board includes Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
President Bush says of McKinnon, "I was really impressed by Mark's creativity, and I was particularly impressed by his honesty." Senator McCain, in his typical straight talk fashion, says, "He's almost a genius."
McKinnon currently serves on the board of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, and lectures at the JFK School of Government at Harvard University and the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin.
McKinnon attended UT Austin and served as editor of the award-winning university newspaper, The Daily Texan. He spent several years in Nashville working as a song-writer with Kris Kristofferson. And was wildly unsuccessful.
McKinnon's quality of life is exceptionally enhanced by the enduring love and patience of his wife, Annie (whom he met before he could drive), and his daughters, Brita, 22 and Kendall, 19.
Maya Rockeymoore, Global Policy Solutions Dr. Maya Rockeymoore is a respected policy analyst, researcher, and advocate with expertise in an array of public policy issues. She is the founder, President and CEO of Global Policy Solutions (GPS); a comprehensive policy consulting company in Washington, DC, and serves as a Professorial Lecturer at American University where she teaches courses on "The Politics and Policy of Race and Gender" as well as "Women, Politics, and Public Policy."
Prior to launching GPS, Dr. Rockeymoore served as Vice President for Research and Programs at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation where she successfully led the implementation of the organization's five-year strategic plan. In addition to managing a portfolio of programs in the areas of economic development, education, public health and international affairs, one of her most important accomplishments in this position was the creation of the Foundation's think tank - the Center for Policy Analysis and Research (CPAR).
Under Dr. Rockeymoore's skilled leadership, CPAR released several influential studies and reports covering issues such as U.S. energy security, global warming, and Social Security reform. Through CPAR, Dr. Rockeymoore's research and advocacy expertise helped define the national debate on Social Security reform and her efforts generated coverage in the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Boston Globe, Houston Chronicle, ABC World News Tonight, Fox News, and C-SPAN among others national news sources. Dr. Rockeymoore is a sought after public speaker who has also testified before Congress on issues of importance to vulnerable populations.
Before joining CBCF, Dr. Rockeymoore served as the Senior Resident Scholar for Health and Income Security at the National Urban League's policy think tank. In this position, she developed a strategic plan for the League's health portfolio, oversaw implementation of a federal health program, and helped shaped the League's welfare reform research agenda.
As Chief of Staff and Senior Policy Advisor to Congressman Charles Rangel in the late 1990s, Dr. Rockeymoore helped facilitate passage of the African Growth and Opportunity Act - the first-ever multi-lateral trade policy between the U.S. and countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Other defining positions held by Dr. Rockeymoore include working as a professional staffer on the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means, as a CBCF Congressional Fellow in the Office of Congressman Melvin Watt, and as an Administrative Assistant to the Director of the Marion County Health Department in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dr. Rockeymoore holds a B.A. in political science and mass communications from Prairie View A&M University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science and public policy from Purdue University. She is the author of The Political Action Handbook: A How to Guide for the Hip Hop Generation and co-editor of Strengthening Community: Social Insurance in a Diverse America. Dr. Rockeymoore was named an Aspen Institute Henry Crown Fellow in 2004 and serves on the board of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.
